Your Pattern package will arrive with instructions to enlarge the patterns 200% to make the applique' designs the size of the originals. HOWEVER, I'd like to point out that the finished background size of the blocks in the original quilt from 1858 varied from 19" to 20" in size. This explains why the quilt finished at 96" x 98".
For uniformity and accuracy in sewing your blocks and quilt together, I recommend the following enlargment instructions:
Enlarge the patterns 200%, IF you wish your quilt blocks to finish at 20".
Quilt will measure 100" x 100".
Enlarge your patterns 160%, IF you wish your quilt blocks to finish at 16".
Quilt will measure 80" x 80".
If you choose NOT to enlarge your patterns - your blocks will finish at 9".
Quilt will measure 45" x 45".
PLEASE NOTE -
We have a network of Quilt Shops in the state of Virginia excited to promote this Blog Along to support the VA Quilt Museum.
These shops are offering individual, monthly FABRIC KITS for quilters to purchase. Each shop providing fabrics that best represent their personal styles. Are you Traditional, Modern, drawn to Batiks? If you're looking for fabric kits you'll be pleased with the variety of themes these shops are offering.
ALL SHOP KITS WILL BE CREATED TO FOLLOW THE ENLARGEMENT AND CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAKING 16" FINISHED BLOCKS!
You can make all the above quilts even larger by adding an outer border around your finished quilt top.
Fabric yardage and cutting instructions for your block backgrounds will be discussed in a separate Post.
I don't understand the purchasing of the pattern..the cost of the quilt patterns are for just 3 blocks or the entire pquilt pattern?
ReplyDeletePatty, when you purchase the pattern - you will receive all 25 block designs.
ReplyDeleteIs the pattern available full size? I find enlarging inconvenient as well as an additional cost.
ReplyDeleteIf you choose not to enlarge the patterns, the blocks will finish at 9".
ReplyDeleteThe complete pattern set has been specially priced at $20, even with enlargement fee's this is a significant savings!
Is the digital download pattern divided in sections so that we can do the enlargement on our home printer? Or do we need to print out the digital pattern, then enlarge it?
ReplyDeleteYou will need to print out the digital download page and then enlarge it.
DeleteWhere are you all getting the enlargements done? I checked at FedEx Office and to get the 200% it will be almost $5/page. Is this the going rate? What is the minimum size paper for the 160% printout? I think I'm making this harder than it needs to be, but I can't figure out how to get the pattern enlarged! I'd really prefer 200% for the original size. Any hints? (Also posted on the Facebook page if that's a better place for this question.)
ReplyDeleteIf printing the patterns at 160% at an office supply store - I recommend you request the pattern printed on 14" x 17" paper. That is the most practical and
ReplyDeletecost effective way to have them printed.
Try Staples/Office Depot or Costco/Sam's - their copy services are always far cheaper than FedEx Office. For some reason FedEx Office is just outrageous.
ReplyDeleteI scanned the pattern into my print program- Print Artist. In the print settings, I chose to enlarge it to 160%. It printed on four pages and I taped them together.
ReplyDeleteI opened the pattern in my computer, chose the page I wanted, clicked on the print icon, chose "current page", under page sizing I clicked on Poster, changed scale to 160%, changed orientation to "portrait", and it prints over 2 pages
ReplyDeleteThank you Wendy for sharing your printing process. I think this will be helpful information for a lot of quilters.
DeleteSorry I wrote 2 pages, it is actually printing over 4 pages, which is still better than taking it to the copy shop!
